Geoff’s story

Geoff’s journey with Guy’s Cancer began in May 2018 with 7 cycles of chemotherapy and 35 cycles of radiotherapy over a period of 7 weeks. The gruelling treatment left Geoff barely able to speak and eventually he couldn’t eat or swallow meaning he had to be fed via a tube.

Geoff joined a clinical trial alongside his treatment plan and was assigned a Clinical Nurse Specialist, Sarah.

Sarah was an absolute rock, and nothing was too much trouble for her. I have so many people to thank for helping me through some pretty dark days but Sarah will always have a special place in my heart for all her professionalism, patience and above all the kindness she showed throughout.

For Dr Teresa Guerrero Urbano, Consultant Clinical Oncologist at Guy’s Cancer and one of Geoff’s clinicians, fuelling innovation in this area is crucial. “It’s a cancer which few people are aware of, and that receives less funding for research, but it’s also a cancer where investment could make a significant difference, with ripple effects for other cancers too,” says Teresa.

Thanks to the expertise of the Guy’s Cancer team and the dedicated care that Geoff received, he received the “all clear”.

Since finishing his treatment with Guy’s Cancer, Geoff has been making the most of every moment he has – using his time to travel with his wife, stay healthy and raising vital funds for Guy’s Cancer Charity and awareness of head and neck cancers. So far, Geoff has travelled the UK by land, air and sea to participate in events.

“I now think of Guy’s Cancer as my extended family. Dr Teresa was just incredible and I don’t know what I would have done without the clinical nurse specialist Sarah. The rest of the team are the unsung heroes; the radiologists, the speech and language therapists, the dieticians, the physio, everybody has been absolutely fantastic. I can’t say thank you enough.”

With the help of generous donations fuelling more moments of progress, the Head and Neck Cancer Centre can continue advancing cancer care and bringing inventive ideas to life, so more people like Geoff can survive and thrive.

Together we are transforming cancer care, one person at a time.
