Celebrating 10 years of Guy’s Cancer Centre

It’s been a decade since Guy's Cancer Centre welcomed its first patient in September 2016, bringing together cancer care facilities that had previously been spread across 13 different locations.

Thanks to generous donors, our charity was able to donate over £33m towards the overall cost of building and equipping the centre, enabling it to go beyond what the NHS could provide.

Since opening, the Guy’s Cancer Centre has become a state-of-the-art facility providing world-class cancer diagnostics and treatment, as well as ground-breaking research and clinical trials.

The dedicated Guy’s Cancer team has continued to push the boundaries of cancer care by pioneering new treatments, testing new approaches and finding new ways to improve care for patients.

Advance care with new technology

The teams at Guy’s Cancer are always looking for ways to advance cancer care and improve patients’ lives. Together with your support, we helped bring their ideas to life by funding pioneering new approaches like circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) testing.

This innovative approach speeds up test results and allows healthcare professionals to provide targeted treatment that’s tailored to each patient and their specific type of cancer.

We’re proud to support this ground-breaking project, which will lay the foundation for ctDNA testing to be adopted nationwide by the NHS. This will help make it part of everyday care, so that patients receive faster and more personalised treatment.

ProFocal-RX laser system at Guy's Cancer

1st ProFocal-RX laser in the UK

We helped to fund the UK’s 1st ProFocal-Rx laser – an advanced laser system used to treat localised prostate cancer. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, Guy’s Cancer is the first centre in Europe to offer this innovative treatment.

Of the first 10 patients with localised prostate cancer treated by the ProFocal-RX laser, eight have had their cancer completely removed in the treated area, with only a minimal amount remaining for the other two patients.

For patients, the procedure is effective and minimally invasive. This advanced laser therapy takes around an hour under a light general anaesthetic, and patients can return home the same day.

Largest robotic surgery centre in Europe

Guy’s Cancer Centre became home to Europe’s largest robotic surgery centre, where surgeons use advanced technology to perform less invasive procedures.

For patients like Gary, this technology has made a real difference. His surgeon used innovative robotic-assisted keyhole surgery to treat his prostate cancer, and was able to remove the tumour without damaging the surrounding tissue, because it enabled smaller incisions and greater precision.

Gary shares, “I’m so grateful this technology was available to me. It helps cancer patients like me recover quicker and lead longer and fuller lives.”

How your donations helped Guy's Cancer centre become a state-of-the-art facility

Your support to our charity helped make Guy’s Cancer Centre a reality, supporting its construction, medical equipment, information technology and the arts. The medical equipment funding included six linear accelerators, PET-CT, MRI, CT, X-ray and orthovoltage units, and an aseptic pharmacy.
