Advanced therapies

With your support, we have helped the dedicated Guy’s Cancer team pioneer research and fuel innovation to advance cancer care. Advanced therapies, such as the Immune Effector Cell (IEC) project is just one of the innovative projects we fund.

What is IEC therapy?

IEC therapy is a personalised process and involves collecting immune cells from the cancer patient and modifying them, so they can better recognise and attack their cancer cells. These enhanced cells are then infused back into the patient where they seek out and destroy cancer cells.

Because IEC therapy is tailored to the individual, it’s more precise and effective compared to traditional therapies, like chemotherapy, which attacks both healthy and cancerous cells. By focusing on the specific characteristics of the cancer, IEC therapy can also result in fewer side effects, leading to better treatment outcomes for patients. This is an exciting breakthrough that provides new hope for patients whose cancers may have been resistant to conventional treatments.

Transforming lives with IEC therapy

Although this pioneering research is ongoing, the team have found that unlike traditional treatments that often require ongoing rounds of chemotherapy or radiation, IEC therapy is often a one-time treatment. For patients, this means less time spent in treatment and more time spent living life.

Due to the complexity of this treatment, IEC therapy is not available everywhere yet. Linda Gomm, Advanced Nurse Practitioner, explains that the treatment involves many different steps, such as surgeries, taking blood, and lymph depletion chemotherapy, which helps prepare the body to accept the modified cells back.

Our vital support has enabled Guy’s Cancer to set up the infrastructure needed to give IEC therapy. This includes additional staff, and increased training and education for current staff.

Being able to offer these advanced targeted treatments to patients is giving them another line of therapy. These therapies won’t be available everywhere, and the reason we’re able to offer these to patients is with the support of Guy’s Cancer Charity

We’re proud to support Guy’s Cancer in moving closer to becoming an advanced treatment centre that can offer these groundbreaking therapies to more people who need them.

Together, we can help provide the very latest in cancer care and fund more personalised treatments that transform lives.
